Confluence Documentation Practice Analyzer

Context

As part of analytics chapter activities, there was a need to better understand how analytical documentation was created and maintained in Confluence: document volume, authorship, structure, usage of agreed formatting patterns, and adherence to internal documentation practices.

The goal was not to “score people”, but to make documentation practices more visible and provide a basis for improving consistency, onboarding, and knowledge reuse across analytical teams.

Problem

Confluence contained a large number of analytical materials created by different authors and teams. Manual review was slow and inconsistent. It was difficult to answer practical questions:

  • which materials were created or updated by a specific analyst;
  • whether documents used agreed corporate macros and formatting patterns;
  • whether pages followed accepted documentation conventions;
  • where documentation practices were strong or inconsistent;
  • which examples could be reused as references for the analytics chapter.

Solution

Built an ad-hoc console utility that used the Confluence API to export pages created or updated by a specified analyst, identified by domain login, and prepared the data for further analysis.

The utility supported structured extraction and inspection of page metadata and page content, including detection of selected Confluence macros used in internal documentation standards.

Scope

  • Retrieved Confluence pages by author / domain login.
  • Extracted page metadata: title, space, URL, author, creation date, update date.
  • Parsed page storage format for selected Confluence macros.
  • Prepared output for further manual or automated analysis.
  • Supported documentation quality review within analytics chapter activities.

  • Presence of required or recommended macros.

What this project demonstrates

This utility demonstrates a practical approach to documentation governance: using lightweight automation to make documentation practices observable, measurable, and improvable.

It also reflects my broader working style: when a process problem appears repeatedly, I prefer to formalize it, extract data, and build a small tool that turns subjective discussion into evidence-based improvement.
